Week 20 in the Middle . . .

Students have adjusted seamlessly to the second half of the school year and it's been a busy time for us in hosting visiting schools last weekend for our MS Jamboree with great competition on the basketball court and in the swimming pool. Congratulations to all participants for representing our school so well!

Our girls in action at the Jamboree:

We have students out this weekend for CEESA Band in Bucharest, Romania, CEESA Choir in Sofia, Bulgaria and CEESA Math Counts in Vilnius, Lithuania . . . the initial feedback is that our students are very much enjoying these varied experiences.

Grade 7 Advisory Challenge:

Catch It If You Can-Grade 7 Advisory Challenge: Perseverance, Collaboration, Creativity, Reflection, Responsibility
Last week, Grade 7 students were challenged to build a device that will launch ping-pong balls and to build a structure that will catch them. With their advisory peers, students were given a specific set of materials to use and strict time limits to finish construction of the launcher, the catcher and have time to practice.  Strategies were devised, building commenced and final structures are currently hidden away from the eyes of opposing advisories.

Students and staff enjoyed the finale of the 7th grade advisory challenge this past Wednesday morning . . .

The winning advisory created a unique catapult device using a balloon and the force of friction to keep the ping pong ball in a pocket before launch.  The catching device used tin foil and an envelope like a basketball backboard and hoop.  Congratulations to the team of Dries Pollers, Marcell Farkas, Fernando Farras, Katie Farthing, Natali Chkhitunidze, Isabella Franco, Leyi Li, and Ru Wajima and Mr. Weingarten.

Winning Advisory!
Special Mention goes out to the Middle School Administration Team-Mr. Ball, Ms. Szundi, Mr. George, and Mr. Savic for their creative building of a shovel and for being risk-takers in competing against 74 seventh graders!

Student Life Update:

This week has been one of the busiest times of the year in Middle School!

Students have been actively preparing for the Prizma Fun Day which will take place on Saturday,February 6th. Seventy-three Blazers will be playing and having fun with fifty children from the Prizma School. The Middle School Student Life Dept. would like to thank the PSA and all parents for your generous donations in support of the Prizma School! On Friday, Blazers who are participants in the Prizma Fun Day got together at lunch to create the gift bags for the Prizma children, and they are full to the brim!

Blazers have also been gearing up to get ready for the All School Book Drive which will take place next week. They set-up a drop-off point in the Middle School Lobby by the Tech Deck, they created posters and a banner to advertise the week and they made several Jings for the morning announcements. If that wasn't enough, students are also getting ready for our celebration of Chinese New Year which will take place on Monday, February 7. We are hoping that all Blazers will help us celebrate this event by wearing yellow or red on Monday!

Next week, please don't forget to drop-off any donations of books, games, DVD's or video games in the Middle School lobby by the Tech Deck. We appreciate any support you can give us.

Finally, we are happy to report that our three groups of students who are traveling for CEESA Band, Choir and Math Counts are having a great time and are safe and sound.

Kind Regards,

Marc Lavoie
Middle School Student Life Coordinator / M.S French
