Week 19 in the Middle!

Semester 1 Report:

I am very happy to report that the 2015-16 Standards Based AISB MS Semester report is now live on Veracross.  The report includes the following:
  • Academic Achievement descriptors for grades 1-7.
  • Reporting Criteria for each standard being assessed.
  • Habits of Learning descriptors.
  • Progress indicators for Habits of Learning across subject areas.
  • Academic progress for all core and exploratory courses.
  • Course summaries and personalized student narrative comments.
We certainly hope you find the report to be a thorough summary of progress for your child and that the overall layout and format is both appealing and easy to navigate.

Please keep in mind that the academic feedback on this report is based on the most consistent and recent student performance relative to our academic standards.

As our Middle School community is at the mid-year point of implementation of Standards Based Grading and Reporting, please feel free to view the following video for supporting information.

Should you have specific questions about your child's progress at this point in the school year, please feel free to communicate directly with teachers.  As you review this mid-year report as a family, it's a great opportunity to reflect on and celebrate successes to date. And, it's also the perfect time to discuss areas for potential growth for the second half of the school year.  Please consider setting reasonable and attainable goals together with your child in support of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.  It's critically important to strive for this balance between academics, involvement in athletics/ clubs and social time with friends and family.

7th Grade Advisory:

Catch It If You Can-Grade 7 Advisory Challenge - Perseverance, Collaboration, Creativity, Reflection, Responsibility

Grade 7 students were challenged to build a device that will launch ping-pong balls and to build a structure that will catch them. With their advisory peers, students were given a specific set of materials to use and strict time limits to finish construction of the launcher, the catcher and have time to practice.  Strategies were devised, building commenced and final structures are currently hidden away from the eyes of opposing advisories. The competition day will be on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd. Grade 7 students will be competing against other grade 7 advisories and the office staff which included Mr. Ball!

Student Life Update:

I am happy to report that 71 Blazers have signed up to participate in the Prizma School Fun Day which will take place on Saturday, February 6th from 9:20 to 12:45. This beats the previous all-time record of 61. The Student Life Dept. continue to be impressed by the level of involvement and commitment that our Blazers are showing each and every day. Last Wednesday, we met at lunch to talk about what the day would look like, what to expect and to appeal for help in getting the gift bags for the Prizma Kids full of small toys, chocolates, candy and fun school supplies.

We have 46 wonderful Prizma Kids coming, and we will be giving them the gift bags at the end of the Fun Day. Should you have any items to donate for the bags, please don't hesitate to bring them to the student life office.

In other news, we have 23 Blazer Barkers who have signed-up to take part in the next dog shelter trip which will take place on Saturday, February 27.

Three of our Blazer Activity Groups are leaving for CEESA events next week! Good luck to CEESA Choir who will be traveling to Bulgaria, CEESA Band who will be traveling to Bucharest and CEESA Math Counts who will be going to Lithuania.

Lastly, stay tuned for the Awesome Blazer Barker Book Drive which will take place the week of February 8-12.

Have a great weekend,

Week 18 in the Middle . . .

January Assembly:

Staff and students enjoyed our monthly celebration together this past Wednesday during advisory.  Our assembly included:

Student Farewells

We are sad to be saying goodbye to 5 of our students this week.  After departing student lunch groups, grade level farewells, bulletin board farewell notes, and best friend goodbyes, the finale was the MS Assembly!  Each departing student was honored with touching words from their friends, and a ONCE A BLAZER ALWAYS A BLAZER gift.

We will truly miss Minseo, Hyungi, Evan, Ji Min and Min Woo.  We send heartfelt BLAZER wishes and look forward to news of their new adventures!!!

7th Grade Drama Performance:

The 7th grade Drama class has been exploring the world of Commedia dell 'Arte. Character archetypes, such as Arlecchino, the trickster, and Pantalone, the grouchy old man, provided a starting point for students devising their own pieces. In their work, students focussed on using different body postures to portray character and create short comic scenes called 'lazzi'.   Some scenes from the performance:

Student Life:

We had a fantastic assembly on Wednesday! We said goodbye to some of our leaving Blazers, watched some very entertaining comedic skits and listened to a presentation on the Prizma School and our very own Prizma Fun Day.

The Prizma School Fun Day will take place on Saturday, February 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.. Every Middle School Student is invited to sign-up and attend. All students were sent a link on Thursday to sign-up. Please make certain that your child signs up only if he or she is 100% certain he/she can attend.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to move two events in our calendar. The February 26th Recreation Frenzy has been moved to Friday, March 11th and the Middle School Winter Co-Curricular Celebration originally scheduled for March 9 has also been moved to March 11th.

Hope you have a great weekend,

Marc Lavoie
MS Student Life Coordinator / MS French

Grade 8 Advanced Spanish:

Grade 8 Advanced Spanish students put their study skills to the test in their market orals this week. Students played the roles of vendors and shoppers in this real life activity.
The goal was for students to express themselves politely (and correctly) in order to get details about items for sale and get the best price. The next time they're in a market, they'll be well prepared!

Week 17 in the MS . . .

Grade 8 Advisory:

As we approach our final week of Semester 1, MS staff and students have been heavily engaged in final assessments and end of unit study.  With this in mind, our 8th grade team decided that it would be a good time to lighten the mood with a fun and active activity in Advisory this past Wednesday.  Ms. Tarbell introduced and led the activities, aimed at engaging all students in a team based, family oriented atmosphere.  It was a great break from the routine!

MS PSA News:

Mr. Robert Goris visited to speak to parents about themes introduced in our MS "Girl Power" After School Activity.  The talk emphasized the importance of supporting our kids' awareness of their surroundings while out in public.   In support of this notion of "situational awareness", Mr. Goris spoke about three main tenants including:
  • establishing a baseline of your surrounding environment - what exists around me and what would be considered normal in this situation
  • identifying anomalies or things that might be considered abnormal in a particular situation
  • having a plan in case something happens
Mr. Goris also emphasized that while we teach our children to be polite and respectful, it's OK for them to avoid acknowledging and interacting with strangers when approached in public.
At the end of the presentation, our "Girl Power" 8th grade girls did an amazing job of demonstrating some of the personal defense strategies they have learned in the ASA.

Student Life:

The Blazer Barkers Dog Shelter Support Group would like to thank you for your continued support! Our amazing Barkers put on the ultimate bake sale on Thursday and raised a further 75,000 HUF for the shelter. With this money, we will be able to sponsor 13 more dogs at the shelter bringing our total to 53.

All week, during our morning Jings, students have had the opportunity to listen to clips of former Middle School Students and staff members praising the Prizma School Project as an opportunity for your children to be part of something meaningful and powerful. The Prizma School Fun Day will take place on Saturday, February, 6 from 9:30 am to 12:45 at AISB. There is no limit to join! All of our students are welcome to participate and partner up with a Prizma child. Highlights of the day will include:

Electric Cars, a jumping castle, a Titanic Slide, professional face painting, professional ballon making, the climbing wall, arts & crafts as well as an amazing bouncing giant obstacle tourniquet! At our next Middle School Assembly on Wednesday, January, 20th  students will hear another presentation about the Fun Day from veteran participants. Mr.Doug Rudnicki, an 8th great teacher will send a sign-up link to all students on Thursday, January 20th.

Have a great weekend!

Marc Lavoie
MS Student Life Coordinator

Week 16 in the Middle!

Happy New Year Middle School Parents!

On behalf of the MS faculty and staff, I certainly hope all members of our community had a great holiday and that 2016 brings great things to one and all!

Students have enjoyed reconnecting with friends and teachers this week and have also enjoyed the snow outside during lunch . . . it has been a great first week back to school.

Student Life Update:

The Blazer Community is roaring to go in 2016!

This week we offered our third hosted activity possibility with the start of the DaddyRoys program. DaddyRoys is an organization that focuses on creating wonderful art pieces out of recyclable materials. We are also in the process of organizing our next two hosted activity offerings which will be grandmaster chess and badminton.

Next week, the Blazer Barkers will be organizing their annual Awesome Blazer Barker Bake Sale which will take place on Thursday, January 14. At our next assembly, the students will listen to a presentation on the Prizma Fun Day Project. The Prizma Fun Day will take place on Saturday, February 6 at school from 9:00 to 13:00 and is an opportunity for your child to spend time and bond with a developmentally challenged child.

Lastly, a huge thank you goes out to our PSA for the wonderful and colorful new couch they purchased for our M.S Blazer Lounge.

MS Spanish Update:

In the Spanish culture, January is filled with holidays, traditions and festive gatherings - food is always included!

The main holiday in January is El Dia De Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Kings’ Day, or the Epiphany), celebrated on January 6th. Spain, as well as most Latin American countries, do not celebrate December 25th as the day children receive their Christmas gifts. Instead, children get their presents on January 6th, El Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos (Three Kings’ Day). This day commemorates the wise men coming to see baby Jesus, bringing the gifts of gold.

On this day, children put shoe boxes stuffed with grass for the king’s camels, under their beds. The next morning, the grass is gone, replaced by a gift left by the three kings. And like Christmas, charcoal is left for children who have been naughty.

Ms. Ana Cuchi-Gracia's Spanish students greatly enjoyed celebrating Three King's Day!
